Baseball Loses in Nail-biter Doubleheader

Baseball Loses in Nail-biter Doubleheader

By Aaron Moody - Blackburn Sports Information

Entering the day, Blackburn was riding on a two game winning streak which featured a few late-inning heroics and some clutch hitting throughout the lineup. Today the team was put in the same position against the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Unfortunately, the same results were not achieved as they were swept in a doubleheader by scores of 5-4 and 1-0.

GAME ONE

The Beavers started off in a hole as Plattville put up three runs in the first inning off of a triple by Zach Demmon. However the team responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning when Matt Mokriakow singled to centerfield and drove in Donny Fuhrhop to narrow the lead 3-1. After a few costly errors by Blackburn, the Beavers found themselves down 5-1 until a two RBI double by Aaron Moody. Moody was then driven in by Josh Voightlander. With the score at 5-4, Blackburn fought to put the tying run on base twice but could not manage to bring it in.

Cody Unser found his groove on the mound going four innings while striking out seven and giving up only two earned runs in the first inning. At the plate, Blackburn was led by Aaron Moody who went 2-3 with two RBI's and Matt Mokriakow who also went 2-3 and had an RBI of his own.

GAME TWO

The second game was a pitching duel as Blackburn found themselves struggling for a hit. Only one hit was mustered in the form of Donny Fuhrhop's 4th inning bunt single. Freshman Kaycee Jones held the Platteville hitters at bay as well only giving up four hits and one earned run in a complete game effort. Platteville scored their only run on a first and third situation when Casey Schroeder stole second and Ryan Duva scored on the throw to second.

For the Beavers, Donny Fuhrhop had the only hit on the day with his 1-1 performance. Now at 2-7, Blackburn will begin conference play this weekend as they host Spalding University. First pitch scheduled for 1:00 pm on Saturday.
