Blackburn Dominates Eureka in Doubleheader

The Blackburn College baseball team improved to 11-9 in SLIAC play with a doubleheader win against Eureka College on Wednesday afternoon. The games were able to be played even though the recent rain attempted to cancel the games. It made the outfield a swamp, but the games were played nonetheless.

The Beavers took game one from the Red Devils by a 7-3 margin. They pulled out to an early lead in the first inning when Donny Fuhrhop roped home two runs. Blackburn manufactured another one in the second on a Dan Witkus RBI groundout. Eureka brought the score within one in the top of the fourth, but the Beavers got those runs right back in the bottom half of the frame. Blackburn scored two more in the fifth to put the game away.

Jacob Baalman(2-1) pounded the zone on the mound by issuing no walks and punching out three hitters. He surrendered seven hits and two earned runs in the game. Josh Voigtlander had an impressive game by going 3-3 with 4 stolen bases. The Beavers totaled ten stolen bases in the game. Donny Fuhrhop also collected two hits at the dish.

In game two, starting pitcher Cody Meyer(1-3) tossed a shutout gem for his first victory of the year. He struck out six while only walking one. He allowed seven hits in the game.

Blackburn strung runs together in each of the first four innings while putting up a six spot in the fourth highlighted by a Donny Fuhrhop two-run bomb to right. The score was out of reach after the fourth with a score of 10-0. Thad would be all the scoring Meyer needed as the game was completed in seven innings.

Cody Flowers, Donny Fuhrhop, and Jose Osorio all had two hits in the game with Fuhrhop driving in three while Osorio plated four. Vinnie Birk led the team with three hits in the contest.

The Beavers now have sole possession of fourth place in the conference with a Westminster College series this weekend of the upmost importance. Westminster is currently 14-5 in conference sitting in second place.
