Baseball Loses 1-0 Heartbreaker in Extras

The Blackburn College Baseball Team battled #6 Webster University through 10 innings in Sauget, Ill. on Wednesday night. The Gorloks defeated the Beavers on a squeeze play in the bottom of the tenth to walk-off with a 1-0 victory.

Sophomore Tim Hillis (Williamsville, Mo.) pitched stunningly by going 9.1 innings and only allowing 6 hits. He walked one and struck out two.

After allowing a leadoff double in the bottom of the tenth, Hillis went to the pickoff play to try and snatch an out. The ball and tag both beat the runner, but the umpire thought differently. An out later with the runner now on third, Webster's Charlie Gandolfi squeezed in the winning run.

Blackburn was held scoreless after a 12-run outburst on Sunday. Webster's 1st Team All-SLIAC hurler Isaac Behme only allowed four Beaver hits while striking out seven. The Beavers had a chance to get on the board in the top of the first after a Franklin Bush (Auburn, Ala.) leadoff double, but they couldn't capitalize on the opportunity.

The other three Blackburn hits came off the bats of Matt Mokriakow (Glen Carbon, Ill.), Josh Voigtlander (Rockford, Ill.), and Vinnie Birk (Swansea, Ill.).

Two games are on tap for this weekend as some previously postponed games will be played. Blackburn will play Carroll University (Wisc.) on Sunday in Springfield, Ill. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for noon. The Beavers are now 1-6 in SLIAC play and 1-15 overall with the bulk of the tough games out of the way.
