Beavers Drop Nail Biter To Spalding

Still in search of their first victory, the Blackburn College Baseball Team finished up their first conference series of the season against Spalding University on Sunday afternoon.  The Beavers entered the day after dropping the first two games 10-2 and 20-10.

Blackburn looked to take the lead early after Matt Mokriakow hit a two-out double.  Jon Lowry followed up with a single to left field, yet it wasn’t enough for Mokriakow to score as he was thrown out at home.  Beaver starter Vinnie Birk shut down the Golden Eagle offense until the third inning when Spalding tallied three runs to take the lead 3-0.

The Beavers answered in the top of the fourth when Matt Morkiakow led the inning off with a single.  Following an Aaron Moody single, Doug Matas singled to second, scoring Mokriakow.  Blackburn would eventually tie the ballgame at three apiece after a Matas hit another RBI single to score Jon Lowry.  Jose Osorio would eventually hit a sac fly to left, scoring Matas.

Spalding retook the lead in the bottom of the eighth after a sac fly, putting them ahead 4-3.  The Beavers had the tying run at second base in the top of the ninth, but could not manage to bring him home.  The Beavers now post a record of 0-11 and a SLIAC record of 0-3.  The next matchup will be a home game against Monmouth on Thursday March, 20th.
