Black Team Takes Game One Of Steak Series

Dominating.  That describes the pitching performance both the red and black team on Thursday afternoon. Game one of the steak series featured red team starter Jarrett Sandlin and black team starter Tyler Morgan using power pitching and excellent command of the strike zone to dominate the afternoon.  It was a bad day to be in the batter’s box.

The first sign of offense came from the black team in the bottom of the fifth.  Sophomore outfielder Walter Jarvis drew a one-out walk to bring up fellow sophomore, Tyler Durand.  Durand executed a solid sacrifice bunt to move Jarvis over, who then made the attempt to go first to third after seeing nobody was covering the bag.  In the ensuing footrace between Jarvis and the shortstop to third base, the throw to nab the Jarvis went array, leading to the first run of the game.

Black team starter Tyler Morgan was still cruising along until the fifth inning.  With two outs, the red team drew back to back walks; followed by a wild pitch, putting the go ahead run in scoring position.  However Morgan would not be rattled and retired the next hitter, escaping any damage.  Morgan’s final line would be five innings of no-hit baseball.

The following inning, the red team had another opportunity to tie the game.  With two outs again, freshman Chris Morrison singled on a line drive up the middle.  Morrison then advanced to second on a passed ball, followed up by going to third on a balk.  It was senior Tyler Gosnell’s turn to escape the inning without any damage as he retired the next hitter as well.

Freshman David Salaiz entered the game for the red team after Sandlin reached his pitch limit. Sandlin also threw five innings of no-hit baseball while giving up one unearned run.  Salaiz would pick up where Sandlin left off, preventing the black team from tallying a hit for the remainder of the game.

The black team then turned to Tyler Durand to get the save.  Durand faced no trouble as he cruised to a 1-2-3 inning, securing the 1-0 victory for the black team.  The black team won the baseball game, despite being no hit by Sandlin and Salaiz.
