Baseball Suffers Tough Loss at Schreiner

The Blackburn College Baseball Team started fast with a three-run first inning but it wasn't enough as the Beavers fell 6-5 to Schreiner University on Tuesday afternoon in Kerrville, Texas. The Beavers started the top of the first with leadoff man Christian Padila drawing a walk, Steven Diaz singled and then freshman Tyler Jackson laid down a nice bunt single that the third baseman threw past the first baseman allowing Padilla to score advancing Diaz and Jackson to second and third.  Ryan Steen then delivered an RBI groundout before Bubby Stepp singled Jackson home giving Blackburn the early 3-0 lead.

The Mountaineers then answered with three runs in the bottom half to knot the contest at 3-3.  The Beavers answered with an RBI single that scored Padilla giving Blackburn the 4-3 lead heading to the bottom of the second inning.  Schreiner answered with a single run in the bottom half to tie the game again, this time at 4-4.

Schreiner took the lead for good with a run in the bottom of the fifth and another in the 7th inning to take the lead, 6-4.  Blackburn scored one in the 8th as Mitchell Binder scored on a wild pickoff throw after reaching earlier after being hit by a pitch to cut the lead to 6-5, unfortunately Blackburn was not able to score again.

Blackburn starter Isaac Garrett pitched the first five innings without a walk other than an intentional one.  Tim Marston pitched a perfect sixth inning in his collegiate debut.

Padilla, Jackson, Diaz and Stepp all had two hits apiece to pace the Blackburn attack.

The Beavers fall to 0-6 to start the season and will play in Belton, Texas on Wednesday night against Mary-Hardin Baylor University.
