Men's Basketball Drops First Conference Game

The Blackburn College Men’s Basketball team started their St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play in St. Louis Wednesday night at Fontbonne University. The Griffins of Fontbonne defeated the Beavers of Blackburn 90-52.

Blackburn started the game off by jumping out to an early lead which was quickly countered by Fontbonne. Once the Griffins got the lead they controlled the rest of the game as there were no more lead changes throughout the remainder of play. Fontbonne went on a 14-2 run to end the first half. At the end of the half the score was 46-26 with Fontbonne on top.

The second half was all Fontbonne as they outscored Blackburn 44-26. The Griffins shot an impressive 61 percent (14-23) from behind the three point line which was a dagger in the backs of the Beavers. Although the game got out-of-hand quickly in the second half Blackburn continued to battle and never showed any signs of giving up.

Blackburn was led by freshman Chris Davis, who had 17 points on the night. Junior Jon Lowry added eight points and four rebounds. Fontbonne was led by Bryan DeGreare, who recorded a double-double (19 points and 13 rebounds). Blake Walsh added 14 points and three assists.

This loss makes Blackburn’s overall record 0-6 and conference record 0-1. The men’s team will take the court again on Saturday December 7 for a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Greenville College. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM (after the women’s game at 1:00 PM).
