Beavers Fall to Panthers

Beavers Fall to Panthers

This weekend, the men's soccer team traveled to Principia College in rural Elsah, Illinois.

At kickoff, with hundreds of fans on campus for homecoming weekend, Principia started the match fired up and looking to shut out the Beavers, scoring three of their five goals in the first half.

During halftime though, Coach Rob Steinkuehler must have given the men a very inspiring pep talk, because the Beavers came back into the match ready to show the Panthers that they were not going down without a fight.

Eight minutes into the second half, Lucas Rochkes gave Blackburn hope, scoring their first goal by dribbling down the left sideline and chipping a shot over Principia's keeper.

Not long after, sophomore Mikey Stephenson also took matters into his own hands, firing a shot past the keeper from the right half of the penalty box at the far post, making the score 3-2.

After seeing the offensively skilled side of Blackburn, Principia switched up their defense, putting marks on the Blackburn forwards and sending their own forwards straight into the box to await a crossover from the endlines. Using this new strategy, the Panthers scored two more goals, then proceeded to play keep away and run out the clock, preventing Blackburn from having further goal opportunities.

The men are now 6-7-1 for the season and 1-4 in conference. The Beavers face Greenville on Wednesday, October 23, at 1 pm on their home turf, looking for a win in conference game six.
