Blackburn Alums Vie for World Record

Blackburn Alums Vie for World Record

A year ago April 13, a group of men attempted to break the Guinness World Record for longest soccer match which was held at Blackburn College.  Many Blackburn College players, coaches, and alums participated in the attempt that raised $75,000 towards pediatric brain cancer research.

On May 21st, three alums will be participating in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for longest baseball game.  The game is projected to last 70 hours.  Rob Steinkuehler, Matt Savoie, and Zach Wilhelmi will take the field with 53 other men to break the record and raise money for The Mighty Oakes Heart Foundation.  Steinkuehler, class of 2009, is currently the Head Coach for the Blackburn College Men’s Soccer team.  Savoie, class of 2008, and Wilhelmi, class of 2011, both played baseball at Blackburn.

The Mighty Oakes Heart Foundation was founded by Greg and Becky Ortyl of St. Louis.  They lost their 15 month old son, Oakes, to a congenital heart defect.  Greg and Becky recognized the struggles of many families during their stay at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, so the foundation was created to help those families.  The mission of the foundation is as follows, “The Mighty Oakes Heart Foundation is dedicated to providing financial support to families coping with the traumatic reality of congenital heart defects, the most common birth defects in the United States. In an effort to help improve the treatment of congenital heart defects, the foundation will also endeavor to identify leading research-and-development grant recipients.”

The world record attempt will begin on May 21st, 7:00 pm.  The final out will be on Sunday May 24th, 5:00pm.   GCS Ballpark, home of the Gateway Grizzlies, will be hosting the world record attempt.  Fans and supporters are welcome throughout the event.  If you would like to make a donation on behalf of Rob, Matt, or Zach visit www.worldrecordbaseball.com, click on donate, then type in Rob, Matt or Zach's name.
