Softball Drops Both Against Benedictine-Springfield

It was another frigid day in Carlinville as the Blackburn College Softball Team played their home opener.  The Beavers hosted the Bulldogs of Benedictine University at Springfield for a doubleheader.

In game one, the Bulldogs struck first with a two-run homerun off of starting pitcher Mary Chamberlain.  The Beavers came back in the bottom half of the inning with a six-run explosion, powered by a grand slam by Abby Sutton.  Benedictine cut the deficit down in the top of the second scoring another two runs.

In the bottom of the second, Erica Wilson singled in a run then Meghan Ude added another with an RBI ground out to stretch the lead 8-4.  Benedictine would not go quietly however, scoring seven unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth inning.

The Beavers managed to tack on a run off of Jaclyn Elmore’s single in the sixth, but it would not be enough as they dropped game one 11-9.

Blackburn was led at the plate by Erica Wilson who went 3-4 with 2 RBI’s.  Mary Chamberlain, Hannah Goett, and Meghan Ude each had two hits.

In game two Benedictine continued their offensive attack scoring eight unanswered runs in the first four innings.  Blackburn cut into the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Faydra Sommer lead the inning off with a walk, followed by a deep double by Mary Chamberlain.  Chamberlain later scored on Jaclyn Elmore’s groundout to the shortstop.

The umpires called the game after the sixth inning due to weather conditions, giving Benedictine the win 8-2.  Faydra Sommer, Erica Wilson, Allison Howard, Mary Chamberlain, and Jaclyn Elmore each had one hit; Chamberlain and Elmore had one RBI each.

Blackburn now falls to 0-4, and will begin conference play Saturday March 21st when they travel to Iowa-Wesleyan.
