Softball Splits With Principia

Softball Splits With Principia

Story by Colin Gowin

It was a cold and windy day at the softball field in Carlinville as the Beavers took on St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents from Principia College in a double-header on April 3.  The first game seemed to be much closer than the scoreboard read. The major turning point in the game was a Principia grand slam in the top of the third inning. Sophomore, Jaclyn Elmore (Lebanon, Ill.) answered with a solo homerun of her own in the bottom of the seventh inning but it was too-little-too-late. Principia took the first game by a score of 10-5.

The second game started around 7:15 pm and it was all Blackburn. The Beavers short-gamed the Panthers of Principia in the fifth inning by a score of 13-1. Blackburn proved their patience at the plate as they reached first base on balls a total of nine times.  Senior, Mary Chamberlin (Johnsburg, Ill.) played a great all-around game, pitching an impressive game striking out six batters and allowing only five hits in the 24 batters she faced, as well as recording a team high three runs, two hits, and one stolen base.

Blackburn’s softball team will be back in action tomorrow, April 4, in a double-header starting at 11:00 am. The games will be with the Bluejays of Elmhurst College.
