Softball Takes One From Westminster

Story by: Colin Gowin

At around 60 degrees and sunny, it was a good day for softball in Carlinville, Ill. Blackburn took on St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents from Westminster College. The teams played in a double-header which saw both teams take one. Blackburn won the first game by a score of 7-5 and Westminster took the second game by a score of 8-1.

The first game saw Mary Chamberlin pitching for the Beavers. She struck out three batters and allowed five runs in seven innings. Blackburn had only eight hits to Westminster’s 14. The big strike for Blackburn was sophomore, Jaclyn Elmore’s (Lebanon, Ill.) three-run homer in the bottom of the third which seemed to spark the offense. Blackburn scored at least one run in every inning after Elmore’s homer. The game ended in Blackburn’s favor 7-5.

The second game had Mary Chamberlin pitching for Blackburn again. The Beaver offense couldn’t seem to carry over from the first game as they only four hits in the game. Westminster had 11 hits, including one home run in the top of the third inning. The final score of game two was 8-1. Junior, Faydra Sommer (Springfield, Ill.) scored the only run for Blackburn, coming from an RBI by sophomore, Meghan Ude (Bunker Hill, Ill.).

Blackburn’s softball team will be back in action on Monday, April 13 at Robert Morris in Springfield, Ill. It will be a double-header, with the first game starting at 3:00 pm and the second game scheduled for 5:00 pm.
