Beavers End Spring Break Trip with Major Comeback Win
Blackburn Softball ended their spring break trip on Wednesday evening with a comeback win over Immaculata University. The Beavers ended up winning five of their eight games over spring break.
The Beavers faced Dean University and Norwich University on Tuesday. They defeated Dean by a final score of 13-5 and won against Norwich 5-3.
Against Dean, the Beavers scored six runs in the first inning thanks to hits from Madi Fry and Zoe Mitchell, with the addition of a sacrifice fly from Taylor Girth. They scored another three in the bottom of the second, and had already established a 9-2 lead heading into the third inning. Dean was unable to score any more runs against the Beavers after the third inning.
Taylor Girth took the win on the mound for the Beavers, as she pitched all five innings of the game.
Against Norwich, the Beavers opened up the scoring in the second inning when Julianna Tabian singled to score two runs. Miley Kwiatkowski added to the scoring later in the game when she scored the go ahead run on a double to left field. She was 2-4 in the game.
Unfortunately, the Beavers took a loss in their first game on Wednesday. Blackburn faced off against Sweetbriar College and lost 11-3.
Sweetbriar jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, then tacked on to their lead in the third inning. Blackburn closed the gap in the fourth inning when they scored three runs, but Sweetbriar ran away with the game in the sixth inning.
Despite the loss, Blackburn ended their trip with a comeback win over Immaculata.
Immaculata scored four runs in the first inning, then another in the second. After tacking on two more in the top of the third, the Beavers scored five runs in the bottom of the third. Then in the bottom of the fourth, the Beavers scored another five runs, taking the lead 10-7. After Immaculata scored two more runs in the top of the fifth, the Beavers maintained a grasp on their lead by scoring two in the bottom of the fifth. They scored one more in the bottom of the sixth.
Multiple hits from the Beavers in the fourth inning led to their comeback win. Michelle Hollon and Ashley Hickerson each collected a hit in the inning that led the Beavers to taking the lead.
Michelle Hollon took the win on the mound for the Beavers. She pitched 4.1 innings and struck out four while giving up zero earned runs.
The Beavers will head back to Carlinville with an overall record of 5-3, and will travel to face the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy on Friday, March 17th. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
