Women's Basketball Loses Lead, Then Game

The Blackburn College Women’s Basketball Team faced the Red Devils of Eureka College on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 in a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game.  The Beavers played a great first half but couldn’t come up with what they needed to stay in the game in the second. Blackburn lost by a score of 76-52.

Blackburn started the first half with a 16-6 run and seemed to be running the show from the beginning of the game. The Beavers kept around a ten point lead until there was 6:40 remaining in the first half. Eureka then went on a 14-0 run to end the first half. This put the Red Devils on top 36-30 at halftime.

Once Eureka was in the driver’s seat, they never looked back. Blackburn was outscored in the second half 40-22. The Beavers shot only 22 percent from the field in the half and gave up 13 turnovers, while Eureka shot 37 percent and had nine turnovers.

Blackburn’s top performers in the game were senior Shelby Smith, junior Briana Rae, and sophomore Danique Smith. Shelby Smith had 19 points on the day and also grabbed eight rebounds. Rae put up 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Danique Smith scored ten points and recorded nine rebounds.

With this loss Blackburn’s record moves to 6-19 overall and 5-13 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. This was the last game of the season for the Beavers. The women’s basketball program will say goodbye to seniors Shelby Smith and Charitie Goodman but still return a lot of talent for next year’s season.
