Iglesias' Late Header Leads Beavers to Victory

The Blackburn College Women's Soccer team made the home faithful happy in today's 2-1 win over MacMurray College. Gabriella Iglesias (San Juan, Puerto Rico) made the gloomy home opener a little brighter after she scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute off of a corner kick.

The game looked as if it was destined for overtime before Iglesias headed a Meghan Sykora (Arnold, Mo.) corner kick into the back of the net. The game winner gives Blackburn a 2-2 record on the year.

At halftime, the game was scoreless. Sykora changed that rather quickly as she finished on a breakaway a few minutes in to give Blackburn a 1-0 lead. She now leads with team with three goals. MacMurray's Carissa Vaughn tied it up at one with her team's first goal of the game and of the regular season. Later in the second half is when Iglesias' heroics put Blackburn up for good.

The Beavers outshot the Highlanders 16-13 in the match and won the corner kick battle nine to two. Sykora had five shots while senior Nique Byots (Carlinville, Ill.) had four. Blackburn's goalkeeper Nicole Kelly (St. Louis, Mo.) had another impressive game in goal as she racked up six saves.

Blackburn will host Lakeland and Rockford on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
