Beavers Battle 1st Place Panthers Tough

The Beavers gave St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leaders Greenville College fits as the Panthers made the trip to Carlinville Tuesday evening.  Greenville, who entered the night leading the SLIAC with a record of 13-1, found themselves losing early after the Beavers established the lead 6-3.  The Beavers looked to maintain their success but the Panthers rallied back to take control 14-13.  Blackburn could not mount a comeback and dropped the first set 25-18.

In the second set, the Beavers found themselves playing from behind after Greenville jumped out to a commanding 9-3 lead.  However the Beavers rallied to tie the set up at 9-9.  The set changed leads several times until Greenville’s libero Jamie Schollenburch took over and put the game out of reach with seven straight service points.  The Panthers took set number two 25-15.

Trying to avoid the sweep, Blackburn came out in the third set fighting.  The Beavers took the early lead 8-7 but the set became a back and forth affair.  The Beavers had fought to tie the set up late 21-21, but could not pull away with the victory.  Greenville took the third set 25-22 thus sweeping the Beavers.

Victoria Bowens led the Beavers with a match-high nine kills while Alexis Dick had a career-high 14 digs.  Blackburn currently sits with a record of 3-28 (1-16 SLIAC).  They will play their final match of the season tomorrow as they host the Blue Jays of Westminster College.
