Blackburn Baseball Loses Doubleheader to Wisconsin-Stout

The Blackburn Beavers baseball team lost a doubleheader to the Wisconsin-Stout Blue Devils, on March 24th, 2019. The games took place at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois.

 

After a shutout first half inning, Blackburn took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore Christian Padilla walked, followed by senior Jonathan Stepp walking. Sophomore Steven Diaz then bunted them over, and beat out the throw to load the bases. Senior Ryan Steen, after two strike, hit a line drive up the middle, scoring Padilla and Stepp. The Blue Devils cut the lead in half in the top of the second however, as Kyle Hamilton hit a double to score Connor Langbehn. The score remained 2-1 until the top of the fourth inning. The Blue Devils took the lead in this half inning, as multiple players strung together hits to score multiple runs. After Kasey Bass doubled to lead off the inning, Reid Akerman doubled to score Bass. Kyle Hamilton then singled to score Akerman. The Beavers fought back in the bottom of the fourth, as freshman Mitchell Binder was able to reach third with one out. Junior Sammy Gordon grounded out to third for an RBI, as Binder scored on the hit, making the score 3-3. In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore Steven Diaz singled up the middle. He then stole second and after Steen singled, Diaz advanced to third. With runners on first and third, freshman Trevor Platt bunted up the first base line to score Diaz on a SAC. The Beavers were winning 5-4 after the fifth inning. In the top of the seventh, the Blue Devils took the lead. After two strikeouts by Jonathan Stepp, Jordan Wilson reached second on a throwing error by the Beavers. Hunter Merrill then singled into right field, scoring Wilson and tying the game up at four. Merrill advanced to second on the throw. Kasey Bass then hit a ground ball that resulted in another error by the Beavers, which allowed Merrill to score. The Blue Devils were leading 5-4 going into the bottom of the seventh, which eventually resulted in them securing the win. Aaron Plostky took the win for the Blue Devils, pitching seven innings, allowing eight hits and striking out six. Sammy Gordon took the loss for the Beavers, pitching six innings, allowing eight hits and striking out two.

 

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Blue Devils jumped out early against Blackburn. After errors by the Beaver defense, the Blue Devils were able to string together two runs in the top of the first. In the bottom of the first, the Beavers cut the lead in half. Christina Padilla walked, and then Steven Diaz bunted him over. Steen then singled and reached second, but Padilla was out at third. Diaz scored on the play. Mitchell Binder then had a base hit to left field, but Steen was thrown out at the plate. The score was 2-1 after the bottom of the first. In the top of the second, Tim Bott was hit by a pitch and then reached third on an error by the Beavers. Reid Akerman then grounded out to first base, allowing Bott to score. Another error also allowed Charlie Szykowny to score, who had reached on a hit. With two outs, Kasey Bass singled, scoring Jordan Wilson. After the top of the second, the score was 5-1, Wisconsin-Stout. After a scoreless half inning in the bottom of the second for the Beavers, the Blue Devils strengthened their grip. Joel Thimsen singled, followed by another single by Kyle Hamilton. Hamilton was caught stealing however, giving the Beavers an out. Tyler Seymour then doubled, scoring Thimsen. Bott flied out to center field, allowing Seymour to reach third. Charlie Szykowny then singled, scoring Seymour. After the top of the third, the score was 7-1, Wisconsin-Stout. In the bottom of the third, the Beavers scored to cut the lead to four. Christian Padilla singled to left center, followed by Stepp moving him to third on a ground out to first base. Steven Diaz then doubled, scoring Padilla. After a wild pitch, Diaz advanced to third. He then scored courtesy of Ryan Steen, who advanced to second on an error by the Blue Devils. He was left on base, as Trevor Platt flied out to deep right field to end the inning. The score was 7-3 after three innings. In the top of the sixth, Jordan Wilson homered to left field to make the score 8-3. After two outs, Thimsen singled, and then advanced to third on an error by the Beavers. Hamilton then singled to score Thimsen. The score was 9-3 after the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, Logan Langbehn flied out to right field for an RBI sac fly. The score was 10-3 after the top of the seventh. Steven Diaz tripled in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Jonathan Stepp. After loading the bases, the Blue Devils held their ground and ended the game with a final score of 10-4. Cooper Beving took the win for the Blue Devils. He pitched three innings, allowed six hits and struck out one. Tim Marston took the loss for the Beavers. He pitched three innings, allowing six hits and striking out none. 

 

The Beavers will play their next exhibition match against Lincoln Christian University. The game will take place on Tuesday, March 26th, 2019, at 1:00 p.m.
