Beavers Offense Secures Win Against Spalding

The Blackburn Men's Basketball Team won their St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup against the visiting Spalding University Golden Eagles on Wednesday night. The game was played at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois, and Blackburn defeated Spalding by a final score of 83-59.

 

Offensively, the Beavers maintained the lead in the game from the very start. Blackburn scored thirteen points in the opening minutes, and continued to offensively dominate for the entire game. Nigel Ferrel led the team with 23 points, going 10-14 on field goals, and one for three on 3-pointers. Karson Hayes followed closely behind with 16 points, going six for ten on field goals and two for four on 3-pointers. Hayes also led the team in assists with four. The Beavers were 33-69 on field goals and 13-29 on 3-pointers. 

Defensively, the Beavers were able to tally nine steals. Karson Hayes, Bryson Kirby, and Nigel Ferrel each had two. Javon Stovall led in rebounds with eight, while the team had a total of 29. The Beavers were able to prevent Spalding from shooting 3-pointers, allowing just 14 3-point attempts throughout the game. 

 

Spalding was led offensively by Jaiquan Edwards, who tallied 24 points. He was eight for twelve on field goals, and a perfect eight for eight on free throws. He also had two assists. Xavier Gari led Spalding with four assists, and tallied four of his own points. The Golden Eagles were 23-48 on field goals, and 5-14 on 3-pointers. 

Jaiquan Edwards also led Spalding defensively, tallying three blocks, with eight rebounds. Troy Amanor led Spalding in rebounds with eleven, but also had a block of his own. Despite the defensive efforts of Spalding, the Blackburn offense was able to develop and maintain a strong lead throughout the game.

 

With this game, the Beavers move to an overall record of 6-10, and 5-4 in the SLIAC. The team's next matchup will be taking place on Saturday, January 25th. The Beavers will travel to Eureka, Illinois to take on Eureka College. The game will start at 3:00 p.m.
