The Blackburn College Women's Basketball Team traveled to St. Louis, Missouri, to face St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents from Fontbonne University. The Beavers coming into the game 0-5 looked to get their first win of the season and start their conference schedule on a high note. The Fontbonne Griffins, also looking for their first win came into the game at 0-2.
Blackburn starters were: Danae Smith, Aleisha Stiltner, Candace Pollock, Elisabeth Johnston and Angela Andrews. A rough start for the Beavers consisting of several turnovers found them behind 6-0 early. Six quick points from freshman Angela Andrews tied the game back up at 8-8 with six minutes left in the first quarter. Fouls and turnovers were the issue for Blackburn in the first quarter and they found themselves behind 14-11 going into the second quarter. The start of the second was more of the same, including Blackburn turnovers and fouls as Fontbonne went on a 10-0 run in the first two and a half minutes. Blackburn was outscored by six in the quarter and went into the locker room behind 35-23 at the half. Blackburn's 25 first half turnovers on 15 Fontbonne steals seemed to be the major difference maker in the half.
Blackburn started the second half with: Danae Smith, Aleisha Stiltner, Danique Smith, Candace Pollock and Angela Andrews. Fontbonne jumped out on an early 18-4 run to put them up by 30 and the Griffins never looked back. At the end of the third quarter Fontbonne had secured a 68-37 lead. The game was opened up in the fourth quarter as a result of Fontbonne's high octane scoring charge. The game ended in Fontbonne's favor with an end score of 90-39.
Blackburn's top performer was Angela Andrews. Andrews recorded a double-double with twelve points and 16 rebounds. The Beavers will take the court again on Saturday, December 5th in a home contest against conference opponents from MacMurray College.
