Baseball Can't Come Through in Home Opener

The Blackburn College Baseball Team dropped their first home game of the season in a 2-1 loss against Monmouth College on Thursday afternoon in Carlinville.

Starting pitcher Jon Lowry (Peoria Heights, Ill.) threw five innings for Blackburn while only surrendering one run. He gave up four hits and two walks while striking out two. Tyler Gosnell (DeKalb, Ill.) and Cody Meyer (Mason City, Iowa) pitched scoreless innings in relief while Tim Hillis (Williamsville, Mo.) gave up the go-ahead Monmouth run in the seventh innning.

Blackburn took the lead in the first inning when first baseman Vinnie Birk (Swansea, Ill.) led off with a single. Sophomore right fielder Matt Mokriakow (Glen Carbon, Ill.) would eventually drive in Birk with a two-out double. The lone run in the first was the only run the Beavers could get across.

Nine runners were left on base for Blackburn. Timely hitting just wasn't in the plan for today's game which led to a low-scoring, one-run loss.

Birk led the way on offense by going 2-3. Franklin Bush (Auburn, Ala.), Mokriakow, Josh Voigtlander (Rockford, Ill.), Aaron Moody (Navarino, Wisc.), Joey Szerletich (Pleasant Plains, Ill.), and Ben Beckwith (Potosi, Mo.) all added a hit on the day.

The Beavers (0-12) will travel to Westminster College this weekend for a conference series.
