Griffins Slide By Beavers in Doubleheader

The Blackburn College Baseball Team dropped a doubleheader to SLIAC opponent Fontbonne Griffins by scores of 5-2 and 11-7.

Game one of the doubleheader has been much of the same all year for the Beavers as they only had four hits. It marked the ninth time this year that Blackburn has had seven hits or less in the first game of a doubleheader.

It looked promising after four innings when the Beavers led 2-1 on an RBI double from Joey Szerletich (Pleasant Plains, Ill.) and a Fontbonne error off the bat of Jared Jones (Mitchell, Ind.). The Griffins countered with four runs in the top half of the fifth. That pushed starter Jon Lowry (Peoria Heights, Ill.) out of the game who was cruising through the order until that point.

Those runs were enough to hold off the Beavers in game one. Tyler Gosnell (DeKalb, Ill.) threw two innings of scoreless relief.

In game two, the Blackburn bats showed up. It was the sixth time this year that Blackburn had at least nine hits in the second game of a doubleheader. Matt Mokriakow (Glen Carbon, Ill.) and Tyler Durand (Mt. Zion, Ill.) had three hits each. Durand also drove in three runs. Vinnie Birk (Swansea, Ill.) had two hits and scored three times.

Jacob Baalman (Hardin, Ill.) was a tough luck loser in game two. But, it wasn't the typical "tough luck" 1-0 game you hear about. Any ball off a Fontbonne bat seemed to find a hole. Baalman forced soft contact all game and the Griffins couldn't have placed the balls any better. Baalman's day came to an end after 2.2 innings and eight hits.

Again, Tyler Gosnell put out the fire out of the bullpen. Bouncing back from game one, Gosnell threw 2.1 more scoreless frames while surrendering just one hit.

The Beavers are now 3-13 in the SLIAC and 8-23 overall. They will be back in action this Friday versus Greenville at 3:00.
