Late Rally Falls Short for Blackburn Baseball

CARLINVILLE, IL – The Blackburn College Baseball team hosted Eureka College in a nonconference game Sunday but a slow start proved to much to overcome as Blackburn fell 10-8.

Senior Jason Hedges led the way with three hits and also had a run batted in and scored a run. Freshman Gehrig Loera added two hits. Juniors Andrew Lozano and C.J. Brunaugh and senior Isaac Gleaves notched two RBI's.

Eureka scored three runs in the first inning and added another in the top of the fourth. The Beavers got on the board in the fourth inning when a Hedges double knocked in sophomore Harley Carney but still trailed 4-1. Both teams added a run in their fifth inning. Medrano walked to get on base and was able to score on Loera's single.

The Red Devils added five runs during their fifth inning while Blackburn scored once. Junior Ian Sullivan was hit by a pitch and soon got to third. He then scored off a fielder's choice by Lozano.

Blackburn trailed heading into the seventh inning and scored five runs in an attempt to comeback. Hedges opened the inning with a double and scored on Lozano's single. With sophomore Brett Lander and Lozano on base, Brunaugh hit a double to score both runners. Gleaves continued the rally with a home run to score Brunaugh. However the five runs would not be enough as Eureka took the 10-8 win.

Blackburn will return to action Tuesday to host Spalding University in a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup.
