Beavers Drop SLIAC Doubleheader

STEENS, MS – The Blackburn College Baseball team visited Mississippi University of Women for a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup but fell to the Owls 10-6 and 6-0.

Senior Jason Hedges and sophomore Harley Carney led the Beavers. Hedges finished the day with three hits, two runs batted in and a run scored. Carney notched three hits including a double and a triple, and scored two runs while knocking in one.

Blackburn struck first in the opener. Hedges led off with a single then moved to second on a passed ball. Sophomore Brett Lander singled through the left side which scored Hedges to put the Beavers ahead 1-0. MUW responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning then added three in the fourth, and one more in the fifth to take a 9-1 lead heading into the top of the eighth.

The top of the eighth saw Carney give Blackburn another run by scoring off a single from Hedges. The Owls answered with a run of their own and made it 10-2 as the team's entered the top of the ninth.

Seniors Isaac Gleaves and Zach Knox helped Blackburn get closer as they both scored runs by taking advantage of MUW errors. Doubles by Carney and Hedges provided two more runs as freshman Diego Perez and Carney both scored but the Beavers were unable to get anything more to fall 10-6.

The offense was unable to get much going in the nightcap to fall 6-0.

The Beavers will return to their home field Monday to take on Maranatha Baptist University in a nonconference doubleheader.
