Baseball Picks up SLIAC Victory With 10th Inning Walk Off

CARLINVILLE, IL -- The Blackburn College Baseballe team picked up their first St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win of the season in walk off fashion by defeating Fontbonne University 6-5 in the 10th inning. They then fell to the Griffins 14-2 in the second game of the conference doubleheader.

Brett Lander led the Beavers with four hits on the day. Lander and Harley Carney tied for the team's lead with three runs scored. Carney also added three hits. Juniors Andrew Lozano and RJ Arredondo, and freshman Diego Perez notched two runs batted in each.

Fontbonne scored first in the opener with a run in the first inning, but Blackburn tied it in their third. Lander got on with a single then moved to second when Carney walked. The duo advanced a base on a ground out from Lozano. Perez followed with a single to left field which allowed Lander to score.

The Griffins responded in the top of the seventh with four runs while Blackburn put one run across in their seventh inning. Junior Ian Sullivan walked and stole second before Lander singled to centerfield to score Sullivan and made the score 5-2.

Blackburn faced the deficit heading into the bottom of the ninth. Lander got the inning started by getting hit by a pitch. He reached second on an error that also put Carney on first. Lozano narrowed the gap with a single to score Lander. Carney followed with a run when Perez hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-4. Lozano eventually got to third and scored the tying run on a ball hit by junior C.J. Brunaugh and forced the game to an extra inning.

The Beavers forced the Griffins into three straight outs in the 10th inning. With two outs, Sullivan doubled. Lozano followed with a single to score Sullivan for the game winning run, helping Blackburn to the 6-5 victory.

In the nightcap, the Beavers faced an early defict but made it closer with two runs in the third inning when Arredondo singled to centerfield which scored Carney and Lander. However, the 5-2 deficit was too much to overcome as Fontbonne added more runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning to take the 14-2 win.

The Beavers will return to action Sunday as they travel to Wabash University for a nonconference matchup. The team then heads to Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Wednesday before returning to conference play Saturday to host new league member Lyon College.
