Al Sturgeon Named Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach

Blackburn College has named Al Sturgeon as the new Head Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach.  Sturgeon is currently the Vice President for Diverse and Equitable Student Life and the Dean of Students.

Sturgeon graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1992 and was on campus during the years that legendary cross country and track coach, John McDonnell, led the Razorback program. After graduation, Sturgeon coached cross country and track at the high school level, winning not only the first state championship in school history (in track & field) but also going on to win back-to-back state championships. After leaving secondary education to serve as a pastor, Sturgeon attended law school and then entered the field of higher education administration at Pepperdine University. While at Pepperdine, he joined the staff of the Pepperdine cross country program at the D1 level where he served for four seasons from 2015-2018.  He is an avid runner and was the top finisher at the 2021 Beaverthon!

“Cross country is a unique sport that is experienced both alone and together. I love coaching cross country not only because I love running, but also to help others achieve their potential—both individually and as a team. I want to thank Coach Steinkuehler for providing me with this special opportunity," said Sturgeon.
