Blackburn Softball was Swept by Westminster

Blackburn Softball drops a doubleheader to Westminster College with scores of six to one and three to zero. The games were played on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Carlinville, Illinois. 



After a quiet first inning, the Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the second. Kasey Ginder singled to left field to drive in two runs. A few bats later, Emily Esquivel singled to drive in Ginder and gave Westminster a three to zero lead. The Blue Jays would add to their lead with a solo homerun from Brooke Laidley. Blackburn would answer back with Jena Thacker scoring on a passed ball. With two outs, Blackburn would have runners on first and third, but they were unable to score any more runs. In the top of the fourth, the Blue Jays would score two runs off of wild pitches and took a six to one lead. In the top of the fifth inning, Taylor Girth would come in to pitch for the Beavers. She would make quick work of the Blue Jays, only allowing one hit in the inning and throwing nine pitches. The last two innings were uneventful as there were only two baserunners combined.

 

WP: Katie Price- 7 IP, 1 ER, 6 SO

LP: Emily Brown: 4 IP, 6 ER, 2 SO

Taylor Girth: 3 IP, 3 HA, 0 R

 

Westminster was led by their lead-off hitter Emily Esquivel, who had three hits, one run batted in, and scored a run. Kasey Ginder drove in two runs and had one hit. 

 

Maddie Wichman and Jena Thacker, each had two hits for the Beavers.


The Blue Jays would be the first to score in the second game with a solo home run off the bat of Mackenize Myers in the second inning. Westminster would add on to their lead in the top of the fourth inning, as Ginder lined a single to right field and drove in Myers. The Blue Jays Laney Rosson scored while Katie Price was in the middle of a rundown.  Blackburn was threatening in the bottom of the sixth with two runners on and only one out, but the Beavers were unable to score. In the seventh inning, Chelsea Ashlocked singled to second with only one out, but was unable to score. 

 

The Blue Jays were able to out-hit Blackburn eight to three. Blackburn did have their chances as they drew five bases on balls. Both teams had good pitching and played clean defense with errors.

LP: Brooke Daniels: 7 IP, 8 HA, 3 ER, 3 SO


Makenzie Myers led the Blue Jays offensively with two hits, two runs, and one run batted in.  Laney Rosson also had two hits and scored a run.

Blackburn had a tough day at the plate leaving eight runs on base and were unable to score a run. Chelsea Ashlock had two of the three Blackburn hits. 



UP NEXT: Blackburn will host Spalding on Friday April 2nd for a doubleheader. The first pitch is set for 3 P.M.
