Blackburn Softball Falls to Wisconsin Stout

CARLINVILLE, IL -- Blackburn College Softball hosted regional power University of Wisconsin Stout Sunday but were unable to pull off the upset, falling to the Blue Devils 3-0 in the first game and 5-2 in the second game.

The Beavers saw five players with hits on the day. Freshman Kenadee Frey had a double while senior Holly Heuerman, sophomore Zoe Mitchell, senior Mckenzie Smith, and junior Grace Mackey all had singles. Smith and Mackie also notched a run batted in each as well. Freshman Kailynn Kruep and sophomore Breana Allen each scored a run.

In the first game, Heuermann and Mitchell both hit singles in the bottom of the seventh inning but the team was unable to get much going as Stout captured a 3-0 victory.

The second game saw the Blue Devils take a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. Kruep started the inning advancing to first after an error by the Stout catcher. She was then able to reach second base off another Stout error on a ball hit by Allen. Frey followed with a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher which let Kruep get to third and Allen moved up to second.

Smith came up next and hit a single to left field, scoring Kruep and moving Allen to third. The run batted in was Smith's second of the season. Mackey followed with her single, hitting one to centerfield to score Allen for her second RBI this year. Smith would get to third with Mackey standing on second after another Blue Devil error, but Blackburn was unable to take advantage of the two runners in scoring position.

The seventh inning saw Stout add two more runs while Blackburn could not get anything going in the bottom of the inning, giving the Blue Devils a 5-2 victory.

Blackburn falls to 0-4 on the season while Wisconsin Stout improves to 7-1. The Beavers enjoy a week from action before they head to Tennessee for their spring break trip. The team opens the trip by taking on Bethel University on March 12 then take on Rhodes College on March 13 and 14.
