2014 Women's Soccer Season Preview

With students back on campus here at Blackburn College, it's that time of year again! The Women's Soccer Team are lacing up their cleats and hitting the fields, preparing for this year's soccer season. Filled with returners and many new faces, Coach Tim Gould has high hopes for how the team will perform this year. "I am confident that our program has an opportunity to move into the top half of the SLIAC  and compete for a spot in the conference tournament," says Coach Gould. This year the team will be playing a few non-conference matches that will include many new opponents and a more competitive balance.

After losing All-Conference goalkeeper Shana Sewick, Coach Gould feels that he has picked up some new talent in his recruits and is confident in his returning players. "Shana was a heavy loss and the type of performer that you do not plan to simply replace with one player. We return defenders with experience such as Emma Witte, Alexis Richie, Chelsea McMillian, Jourdin McFarland, and Christy Hobbs. They will be counted upon to limit scoring opportunities throughout the season.

Freshman goalkeeper, Nicole Kelly, will be a strong presence as she enters BC after manning the same position for perennial Missouri power Rosati Kain of St. Louis. Freshman Kailey Bunton of North Mac is positioned to hold backup duties," Coach Gould states. The team has already made progress from last year's season, building up quite a roster of newcomers and transfers. Blackburn is excited to see how the program continues to progress under Coach Gould's second year as coach. "Our program made strides last year, winning two more matches than the previous season, despite suffering key injuries while having a less than ideal number of players in the program. A strong recruiting class adds to our versatility and depth. Newcomers will be counted on to contribute in all areas of the field with our opening match against Concordia-Chicago," said Coach Gould.

The Women's Soccer Team will kick off their season this weekend in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and will play their first home game of the season September 11, at 3pm against MacMurray College. Come out and support the Beavers in this important conference game!
