Yellow Jacket Hitting Attack Stings Beavers in Non-Conference Loss

The Blackburn College Baseball Team fell to the Yellow Jackets of Howard Payne University 14-6 on Tuesday in Brownwood, Texas.  The Beavers couldn't match the 17-hit attack of the Yellow Jackets and fall to 3-6 on the season.

The Beavers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Mitchell Binder drove in Blaine Dunning with a single up the middle.  Howard Payne came back with two runs in the bottom half against freshman right-hander Yoshua Simmons who was making his collegiate debut.  Blackburn tied the score in the third inning off a sacrifice fly by Tyler Jackson but squandered a bases loaded no-out situation.  Howard Payne knocked out Simmons with a four-run frame in the bottom of the 3rd.

Blackburn answered with a run in the 4th as Trevor Platt drove in Derek Dickerson with an RBI single but the inning ended with a double play, the first of the three that the Yellow Jackets would turn on the day.  Howard Payne added two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth before blowing the game open with a four-run 7th inning.

Platt led the Beavers with a pair of hits as Blackburn was out-hit 17-7.

"We couldn't control the count all day and Howard Payne took advantage of that all afternoon, they are a well-coached team with a good approach at the plate and we rarely got in situations on the mound we could control the action," said Blackburn Head Coach Mike Neal.

The Beavers will now travel to Belton, Texas Wednesday night to take on the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in a 6:00 PM game.

**Schedule Change -- Blackburn will now play a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Dallas Christian on Thursday as impending rain on Friday and Saturday has put that four-game series in jeopardy.  The forecast is excellent for Thursday so the hope is to get a pair of games in Thursday and find a way to complete the series Friday or Saturday.

**Texas Hospitality -- The Beavers and Yellow Jackets enjoyed dinner together in Brownwood after the game compliments of the HPU baseball program. "This was our first ever meeting with Howard Payne, and Coach Lynn and his staff run a first class program and we appreciate their hospitality and the culture of their program," added Neal

**Beavers Travelling Well -- With five players on the roster on the roster from Texas, Blackburn has had great fan support at the games on this year's spring trip.
