ST. LOUIS, MO -- The Blackburn College Baseball team traveled to Fontbonne University for a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday. The Beavers kept both games close but were unble to take victroy as the fell 1-0 in the opener and 5-4 in game two.
Game one was scoreless for both teams until the sixth inning when Fontbonne scored. The Beavers consistently threatened to score with multiple runners in scoring position but were unable to capitalize.
In game two, Blackburn started by scoring a run in the top of the first inning. Senior Andrew Lozano singled to first followed by a batted ball by junior Joshua Moreno to help advance Lozano to second. Lozano then advanced to third on senior RJ Arredondo's fielder's choice. Sophomore Diego Perez singled to shortstop to score Lozano and put the Beavers up 1-0.
The Griffins tied it in the third but BC added another run in the fifth. Senior C.J. Brunaugh reached first off of a single to centerfield. A batted ball by Arredondo advanced Brunaugh to second and Perez doubled to centerfield to help Brunaugh reach home. However Fontbonne answered in the fifth with an additional two runs putting them in the lead 3-2.
Arredondo scored for the Beavers in the seventh inning. He walked to first and reached third off of a single by Medrano, then made it to the plate on Perez's fielder's choice. In the eighth inning, Lozano hit a ground-rule double and scored off of a double by Moreno, which put the Beavers up 4-3.
Unfortunately the Griffins scored two more runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to regain the lead and secure the win 5-4.
The Beavers will return to action on Tuesday afternoon to host Webster University in another SLIAC doubleheader.
