FULTON, MO -- Blackburn College Softball opened St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a sweep over Westminster College, winning 3-1 and 4-1.
The Beavers got the scoring started in the third inning. After senior Julianna Tabian got on first, sophomore Kailynn Kruep followed with a ball to the centerfield fence which got her to second. She then advanced to third while the Blue Jays threw home in an attempt to throw out Tabian, but the throw was off which allowed Tabian to score as well as Kruep to cross home plate to put BC up 2-0.
In the fifth, Kruep started the inning with a single and found herself on third after a wild pitch and a single from sophomore Kenadee Frey. Junior Zoe Mitchell followed with a sacrifice fly to score Kruep to give Blackburn a 3-0 lead. The Blue Jays answered with a run in the bottom of the inning but senior pitcher Shelby Koenig allowed just one single over the last two innings to help give the Beavers the 3-1 win.
Junior Caroline Gibson got things started early in the nightcap as she hit her second home run of the season to put the Beavers up 3-0 as Kruep and Mitchell both walked before Gibson's homer.
Gibson would give the Beavers another run in the third inning with a sacrifice fly to score junior Breana Allen.
Leading 4-0, BC allowed a run in the sixth inning but held on to win 4-1.
With the victory, the softball team moves to 10-9 on the season and are now 2-0 in conference play. The Beavers return to action Friday to take on Principia College in another SLIAC matchup.
