Beavers Celebrate Riley On Senior Day

Blackburn Women’s Basketball played in their final game of the 2022-23 season on Saturday afternoon. The Beavers hosted Principia College, and lost by a final score of 85-39.

1st Quarter: Being down two key players made the first quarter a struggle for Blackburn. With both Mariah Hopson and Aryanna Harris out with injuries, the Beavers were playing at a disadvantage missing their best scorer and veteran point guard. Blackburn managed a handful of shots in the first quarter, but not many found the net. Principia, however, was able to generate enough offense to find 19 shots in the quarter. The Beavers got into foul trouble early, and gave Principia the double bonus. At the end of the first quarter, Principia led Blackburn 17-7.

2nd Quarter: Principia opened the second quarter with a quick bucket, followed by another pair of quick shots. After a turnover forced by Principia, a three by Alana Hinson gave them a comfortable 25-7 lead. After knocking down another shot just after, Principia was leading 27-7 with 7:49 left in the quarter, forcing a timeout from Blackburn. Principia continued their scoring run following the timeout, and soon after the Panthers were up 35-7. By the time the halftime buzzer sounded, Principia led the Beavers 42-20.

3rd Quarter: After celebrating and recognizing the career accomplishments of senior guard Courtnee Riley at halftime, the Beavers started going on a scoring run of their own to begin the half. When there was just under 6:00 left in the game, the Beavers were down 51-28. Freshman Kaela Vincent drained several buckets for the Beavers during the quarter. Shooting from the wing, she couldn’t seem to miss the net during the quarter. The Beavers got put into a difficult position later on in the quarter when it appeared that Riley had fouled out, however the senior was able to remain in the game after deliberations with the referees. At the end of the 3rd quarter, Principia was leading the Beavers 63-32.

4th Quarter: With the lead, Principia spent the fourth quarter closing out the game. Keeping a comfortable lead throughout the quarter, Principia was able to walk away victorious after continually forcing turnovers from Blackburn throughout the game. Courtnee Riley received her official farewell when she was subbed out with 43 seconds left, which was ensued by a lengthy round of applause from Dawes Gymnasium. The Panthers won the game by a final score of 85-39.

The Beavers end their season with a 2-22 record. Thank you to all our fans for your continued support throughout the season.
