Kait Wiegand Becomes Blackburn's All-Time Kill Leader

Kaitlyn Wiegand is the new all-time leader in kills in Blackburn history. Passing, Alanni Young who had a total of 617 kills. Wiegand entered the season with 537 kills and only 13 games to break the record. Entering today's game she needed three kills to pass Young and she needed 2 blocks to be fourth all-time in program history. Wiegand surpassed Young during today's game with her third kill coming in the first set with the score 14 to nine Webster. Holly Heuerman was credited with the assist. Wiegand finished the match with 11 kills giving her 625 kills total. 

 

Wiegand attended Lutheran High School in Springfield, Illinois before she became a Beaver. Throughout her career, she started in at least one game each season. Wiegand was a leader on the court as she was a two-time captain for Blackburn. She has been honored for her academics,receiving the SLIAC All-Academic Award twice.In her Blackburn career, Wiegand has played in 95 matches and played in 330 sets. Wiegand had 614 kills, 284 digs, 59 serve aces, and 177 total blocks. 

 

Wiegand is an Early Education major, currently student teaching at Northwestern Elementary and plans to graduate this coming spring.  

 

In an interview before the season, Wiegand was asked about her upcoming season as an individual. She expressed that, " I do not want to give out too many details, but I am very close to breaking a school record. I'm not going to say what and I'm not going to say how close because I do not want to jinx myself. I am very excited to be an aggressive senior."

 

When asked about her experience as Blackburn she responded, "After a few bad seasons, I was on the committee to hire coach Hauser. After looking at her resume and seeing her, I said I wanted her as the coach. Coach has helped Blackburn become a name that people will respect. That's all I have wanted for this program is to help build it into something that people will remember and people are proud to be a part of."
