Volleyball Wins Last Game of Season

Blackburn Volleyball won their final game of the season on Tuesday night. They faced the visiting Tigers of Iowa Wesleyan University. Blackburn took the win in five sets, by the following scores.

Set 1: Blackburn 25, Iowa Wesleyan 27

Set 2: Blackburn 18, Iowa Wesleyan 25

Set 3: Blackburn 25, Iowa Wesleyan 18

Set 4: Blackburn 25, Iowa Wesleyan 22

Set 5: Blackburn 15, Iowa Wesleyan 10

 

Senior captain Kaitlyn Wiegand played her final game in Dawes Gymnasium tonight. She finished her career at Blackburn with 638 kills, sitting at number one in the Blackburn record books. Wiegand was an example for the program of what leadership, positivity and passion looks like. Blackburn congratulates her on an astonishing career.

 

Blackburn was led offensively by Lucy Magnussen. She finished with 15 kills out of 26 total attacks. Wiegand followed just behind with thirteen kills. Elizabeth Bowyer totaled eleven in the match. Autumn Wilson led in assists with 25, while Sabrina Kelsey tallied 22. Amanda Swedberg had seven of her own. Swedberg was responsible for four service aces in the match. As a team, Blackburn finished with 64 kills, 192 attacks, and 56 assists. The team had ten service aces.

Defensively, Blackburn was led by Amanda Swedberg. She finished with 30 digs, as well as 22 service receptions. Karlee Herman racked up ten digs along with 14 service receptions. Holly Heuerman was a major conribution, with 16 service receptions of her own. The team as a whole had 90 digs, with 85 service receptions. Elizabeth Bowyer was responsible for the only solo block for Blackburn, although the team finished with four total blocks.

 

Iowa Wesleyan was led offensively by Lezar'Rhea Burnside, who had 16 kills. Malieokekai Damate finished with 14 kills, and Anna Ledil had eleven. Lindsey Fernandez tallied 31 assists for Iowa Wesleyan. Leamaris Fuentes finished with 20. As a team, Iowa Wesleyan had 60 kills, 184 attacks, and 57 assists. Jenna Murphy was able to obtain five service aces for Iowa Wesleyan, out of the team's eleven total aces.

Murphy also led defensively, racking up 23 digs. She also had 29 service receptions. Damate finished with 17 digs and 33 service receptions. Jaden Streeter had 15 digs as well as 15 service receptions. As a team, Iowa Wesleyan finished with 92 service receptions, and 91 digs.

 

Blackburn finished the season with an overall record of 6-9. With a season that was unpredictable due to COVID-19, the Blackburn Volleyball team fought to the very end. With a talented group of young athletes, head coach Morgan Hauser will be looking to take a huge step forward in their next season.
