Blackburn Playoff Game Preview

The countdown is on tonight as the Blackburn Volleyball team prepares for their postseason match against Webster University tomorrow. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Webster University’s Grant Gymnasium.

The last time that Webster and Blackburn faced off was on October 22nd. Webster won the match in five sets against the Beavers. In that match, Emily Eitzenhefer had 14 kills, while Emilie King collected ten of her own. Autumn Wilson finished that match with 17 digs.

Webster won the first set of that match 25-14, and then the Beavers shifted the momentum. Blackburn took the second and third set from Webster, with the score of 25-21 in both sets. Webster was able to put a stop to their bleeding by taking the fourth set from the Beavers, 25-15. Webster carried their momentum from the fourth to the fifth set and defeated Blackburn 15-8.

Prior to the match on October 22nd, Blackburn hosted Webster University in Blackburn’s tri-match, which took place during Blackburn’s homecoming weekend, on September 24th. The Beavers made school history that day by defeating Webster for the first time in over twenty years. The Beavers took the first two sets from Webster by the scores of 25-17, and 25-18. Webster evened the game at 2, winning sets three and four by the scores of 25-21 and 25-11. Blackburn made their stand in the fifth set and won by a score of 15-11.

Eitzenhefer was a key weapon in that match as well as the October 22nd match, as she finished with eleven kills. Abby Sobczak and Jessica Muckensturm both collected ten kills in that match.

It’s safe to say that tomorrow’s match against Webster will be a challenge for the Beavers. Head coach Marlee Kirby has high hopes for her team going into the match. In an interview with Kirby, when asked what her thoughts were going into tomorrow’s match, with consideration given to the fact that both previous matches went to five sets, she said the following.

“Webster is a great team with a very successful program, and we cannot take that lightly tomorrow. However, taking them to five sets twice this year does give the girls a lot more confidence going into the game tomorrow!”
