Beavers Take on Lyon in Doubleheader

CARLINVILLE, IL – The Blackburn College Baseball team hosted Lyon College in nonconference games but fell to the Scots 9-3 and 11-2. 

Freshman Dominic Medrano led the way with four hits through the two games. Junior Andrew Lozano added three hits and two runs batted in. Freshman Diego Perez also had three hits while sophomore Brett Lander also added two RBI's. Freshman Luke Ellinger finished the day with two doubles and freshman Gehrig Loera had a team-best two runs scored. 

Lyon got the game started with four runs in the first inning but Blackburn responded with two in the bottom of the second. Senior Isaac Gleaves got the inning started with a walk then got to second when sophomore Harley Carney singled to right field. Lander followed with a double to score both Gleaves and Lander to narrow the gap to 4-2. 

The Scots added runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh inning and held a 9-2 lead heading into the ninth inning. Perez and Medrano both singled before Gleaves got to first off an error to load the bases. Carney followed and hit a ball that resulted in another Lyon error to score Perez, but it would be the only run Blackburn scored as they fell 9-3. 

Blackburn scored first in the second game. Loera started with a single before Ellinger doubled to move Loera to third. Lyon committed an error during the next at bat by Lozano which let Loera score and put the Beavers ahead 1-0. 

In the third inning, Loera walked and got to third after a wild pitch and a ground out. Lozano then came up and hit a double to right center to score Loera and put Blackburn up 2-0. However, the Scots answered with runs in the next four innings on their way to an 11-2 victory. 

The Beavers will return to action Wednesday to visit NCAA Division II foe McKendree University. They then head to Greenville College Friday for resume St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
